Everyday life of the holy city

Indian Varanasi is a holy city. Also known as Benares, the city is one of the most important places of worship for both Hindus and Buddhists. It is here where ablutions in the Ganges ensure cleansing of the sins, while cremation and burial in the waters of the holy river liberate from Samsara-the circle of incarnations.

The city is full of contrasts, with sacrum and profanum constantly merging. No wonder, god Shiva who founded this one of the oldest human settlements, is a creator but also a destroyer.
